Caramelized Brandied Pear for Dessert

I had a pear from last week’s produce basket that was right at that almost over ripe stage. And you know I can’t bear to let organic produce go to waste. So, I sliced it in half, leaving the stem on for aesthetic value. Then I placed it cut-side up in a small sauté pan, sizzling with a teaspoon of butter, and lightly sprinkled it with ground nutmeg and ground cinnamon.

At this point, I took a deep, slow breathe and let the aroma linger. Then I evenly sprinkled it with a teaspoon of raw sugar and gently flipped the pear halves over onto their cut sides. After adding two small splashes of brandy to the pan, I swirled the pear halves in the brandy as the sugar caramelized against the warm fruit.

I served mine in a large tea cup and ate it with a small spoon, so I could savor each morsel. You could split the dessert onto two small plates and share with your date, if you’re feeling generous. Otherwise, you may want to find another pear.

Bon Appetit!
